Dear Nancy Clark:

I am majoring in electrical engineering at City College of New York. The main reason is that my uncle is also an electrical engineer and he has exposed me to some of the projects he works on and caught my interest. What I would consider a career goal is getting a job at Con Edison which is one of the largest investor-owned energy companies in the United States. The path I chose is not an easy one according to most of the people I had a conversation with, but this only motivated me to work harder and planning. I spoke to my advisor about the classes I need enroll in the Grove School of Engineering, as I am taking these classes, I will be looking for internships related to my field, preferably Con Edison.

My father is a hard-working man. Ever since I was a little kid, I have always seen him driving a cab. He has been doing this for more than twenty years. My wish is to someday tell my dad he does not need to work anymore because hopefully by then, I will have a well-paying job related to my major. I also want to support my family in Pakistan because it is not easy to find a job there. I have cousins in Pakistan who are making close too $100 in a month. I want to be able to help them out because my parents thought me to be a giver. In my culture, the wife tends to stay home and take care of the kids.

Money also plays a role in why I chose this major. One of my goals is to drive a nice car. I would love to own a Mercedes S Class 550 and a Range Rover. The average salary for an electrical engineer is around $89,000. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t doing this for the money. There is a saying, “Money can’t buy happiness.” A wise man once replied, “I would rather cry in a Ferrari.”

College is a big deal for me because I am the first person to go to college in America. There is a bit of pressure on me from my parents. One must enjoy his career. I believe a forced career is not a career. My parents made sure I understood the fact that I am not being forced, they said I can choose any career I want. I chose electrical engineering.

Everything we look at today has something to do with engineering. From the moment we leave our houses for our everyday life, getting from point a to b, engineers have a major role in that. I must take the train every day to get to college, thanks to electrical and mechanical engineers. Stop lights, one of the most important things in driving,           has something to do with electrical engineering. Electrical and hybrid cars are some advancements to solve pollution. The future of engineering is bright. I think that 3D printing will become the next big thing because I won’t go to the store if I need cups, spoons, plates, etc.

Re:      School Escalators

Escalators

The North Academic Center has many escalators. Almost every day, there is a broken-down escalator and can be inconvenient for some people, especially when the escalator is blocked. The time it can take in an elevator can be significant to a student being marked as late. Some professors will only give a three-minute window after the class starts to hand in an assignment if not, they will take off half of a letter grade. The escalators shouldn’t be the reason a student gets penalized in class for.

Why do they stop working?

In the fall semester, there were two people fixing the escalators. I asked one of them what the problem was and he said, “This machine has hundreds of parts, if one gear stops working, it causes a chain reaction.” I went on to ask him, “What might be the reason this gear might stop working.” He replied, “A lot of garbage gets into these parts, street dirt, pen caps, gum, coins, and small keys manage their way to get inside through the joints.”

Possible Solution

We can raise awareness for people to stop throwing things on the escalators. We can do this by posting signs and trashcans near every escalator. This way, we can lower the chances of escalators stopping. We should also make maintenance happen more often, once a week. The day this should happen is an off day, a Saturday or Sunday. By maintaining these escalators once a week on an off day, it won’t cause inconvenience for professors and students to get to class and it will keep the escalators in top shape.

If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at any time.

Running Head: What is the Best way to Preserve a banana

What is the Best way to Preserve a Banana?

Hassan Zia

City College of New York

Abstract: I conducted this experiment to see what the best way is to preserve a banana. After four days of leaving the bananas alone, it turns out the best way to preserve a banana is leaving it out in room temperature. Since the other two bananas turned brown, it is safe to say that is not a good way of preserving bananas.

Introduction: Bananas are an interesting fruit and are very nutritious. They help with stabilizing sugar levels and with the digestive system. The purpose of this lab is to find out what is the best way to preserve a banana, is it freezing, refrigerator, or left outside in room temperature. Since the refrigerator preserves food the best, that will be the best method for preserving the banana. The room temperature one will not do so good because of the temperature.

Materials:

  1. Bananas
  2. Refrigerator
  3. Freezer
  4. Table

Procedure: For this experiment, I bought three bananas which I placed in different locations. I observed each banana and they were all somewhat similar. The first banana which is the control will be left out in room temperature. I placed the second banana which is my variable in the refrigerator. I then placed my third banana which is my other variable in the freezer. I left these bananas in each of their locations for four days. On the fourth day, I observed them again.

Results: The banana in the refrigerator turned brown. The whole peel of the banana changed its color. The banana in the freezer turned into a dark brown color. Just like the one in the refrigerator but a lot darker. The banana which I placed in room temperature turned light brown only in a few spots.

Discussion: The public views the refrigerator as a good source of preserving food. Turns out, for a banana, the best way to preserve it is too just leave it out in the room. Both the bananas in the freezer and the refrigerator turned brown. We can conclude that an unpeeled banana does not work well with the cold. The one left out stayed yellow and turned brown only in a few spots. My hypothesis was defeated since I thought the banana in the refrigerator would be preserved the best.

Conclusion: The best way to preserve a banana is to leave it out in room temperature. The banana left out in the room stayed the most yellow more than the others. We can conclude that a banana works best with room temperature.

The first ballpoint pen was invented by a man named John J. Loud in the year 1888 in America. This invention had many flaws such as not distributing the ink evenly and dried ink causing blockage inside the pen. In the 20th century, a Hungarian newspaper editor named Laszlo Biro wanted to improve on this invention in a way that the ink would dry quickly. Since he worked in the newspaper industry, he knew that the ink used on the newspapers dried up quickly leading him to experiment with his brother, Gyorgy, a chemist. The first working ballpoint pen was presented in Budapest.
-Sohail, D. (2014, March 06) Pusher: This part is used to bring out the ballpoint from inside the pen. When the pusher is pressed down, it exposes the ballpoint. Not all ballpoint pens have a pusher. Some have a simple cap.
Company Name: This part of a pen is usually for advertising purposes. Without a name, no one would know what brand the pen is.
Clutch: This is a button that is used when a person is done using the ballpoint pen. When this button is pressed, the ballpoint goes back inside the pen. The pusher and the clutch are basically a turn on and a turn off button. Some ballpoint pens do not have a clutch. Instead, they just have a pusher which would need to be pressed again for the ballpoint to go back inside the pen. Plastic body: The purpose of the plastic body is to keep everything in place. These come in different shapes and sizes. Most of the design goes on to this piece.
Ink Refill: The ink refill is used when the ink runs out and can be replaced with another ink refill.
Ballpoint: The ballpoint is what gives this pen its name. The material used for the ball is usually steel or brass. The ballpoint consists of two parts, a socket, and a ball. The socket is what holds the ball from falling out. The size of the ball and socket is significant because the ink can leak out even with the smallest gap. If the socket is too tight, it will be hard for the ball to move. When the ball is rolling on a piece of paper, gravity is forcing ink to touch the ball each time it is rolled which causes the pen to write.

Proposal:

Solar Panel Electric Cars

Solar Panel Electric Cars

Andre Cunningham, Hassan Zia, Alan Agarunov, Kobe Saquicela

City College of New York

Our proposed innovation is to create a solar-powered electric car. The inspiration behind the
idea is to take less focus off of oil and put more focus on global warming. The car will be based
on a Tesla Model S. We plan to form a partnership with Tesla so they can supply us with the
vehicles. The ability to charge the car will stay as solar panels are not 100% reliable for a
source of energy. The total price to create one solar-powered car will cost us $78,592. For the
workforce, we will pay 20 people on the installation team an hourly pay of $25.50 and 5 people
on the marketing team an hourly pay of $31.25. Our experience will be a 4-year degree in solar
engineering if on the installation team and a 4-year degree in marketing. Our future plans are to
build our company up and expand into other continents.

The Problem:

Solar Panel Electric Cars

Earth is not heading in a good direction as global warming is causing the Earth to heat up to high
temperatures. Also, non-renewable resources are being used faster than ever and we are on a
quick pace to use it all up. Fossil fuels are one of these non-renewable sources being used
rapidly. With electric cars, we can help slow down this process but many people are not a fan of
electric cars due to the availability of charging stations and this is where solar panels come into
play. Using solar panels on electric cars can help create longer trips and another way to charge
the battery quickly.

Our Purpose

Our goal is very simple. We want to provide a new way of driving electric cars. The downside to
electric cars is that they must be charged. Charging them can be inconvenient at times. My
solution to this problem is having a solar panel placed on these cars. This will allow the car to
charge and store solar energy when the electrical energy runs out. The problem with solar panels
is that they are not good looking. Many people buy cars to show a sign of wealth and power.
Having a solar panel installed on the top of a car may cause the car to not look as good. By
making a nice solar panel design and fitting it on to the cars, we can have solar energy and a
better-looking car. By utilizing solar energy and placing them on cars, a large portion of air
pollution will be decreased.

Solar Panel Electric Cars
Background of Global Warming

Global warming has been a topic on scientists minds since the mid 20th century. We first
realized this and gave it the name “the greenhouse effect.” This is when the Earth traps heat
causing the Earth to warm up as a whole. Water vapor, nitrous oxide, methane and carbon
dioxide are the main greenhouse gases that enter the atmosphere. Global Warming is still a
continuing problem today but many people ignore it so the future has to worry. Now it has gotten
to a point where a scientist is considering if the Earth will live past the year 2050.
Blueprints

Above shows the blueprint of the Tesla Model S, the car we are basing off of.

Solar Panel Electric Cars

Above shows the blueprint of the E20/435 solar panel being placed on the car

How Much Does it All Cost?

For each car, the price comes out to be $78,592. This counts for the Tesla Model S itself
($76,000 according to retail), the E20/435 solar panel from SolarPower ($2,052) and the extra
wiring ($540 according to the wiring need for solar panels on a house). For marketing, we plan
to spend a total of $255,500. Local ads in 25 states for $37,500, ads around social media (twitter,
facebook, and Instagram) for $198,000 and a limit of $20,000 on YouTube. For our workforce, and hourly pay of $31.25 for the marketing team and hourly pay of $25.50 for the installation
team.

Materials Needed

Solar Panel Electric Cars
The materials needed for this innovation are pretty simple. The car itself will be supplied by
Tesla. We would get the wiring and solar panel from the company SolarPower which supplies
the E20/435 model. The only thing we would have to search for is the human workforce we plan
to hire.

The Math Behind It

The car consumes 0.35 kWh (kiloWatt-hour) per mile driven. The rest of the systems of the car
(highly computerized car) will use an additional 0.2 kWh. The batteries in the car can hold a total
of 80 kWh. This solar panel produces around 915 watt-hours or 0.915-kilowatt hours. This means
in a 24 hour time period, the solar panel will produce 21.96-kilowatt hours for the battery, which
is 27.45% of the total charge the batteries can hold. The solar panels can take the normal 700-mile
trip and extend it by an extra 192.15 miles. Those extra miles can help someone reach their
destination quicker knowing they do not need to look for a charging station.

Labor Power and Time

Our plan is to hire 5 people for the marketing team and around 20 people for the installation
team. We want to start off small at first and begin to expand and grow if sales seem high. Since

Solar Panel Electric Cars
the only requirement is a 4-year degree, either in solar engineering or marketing, we will be
hiring people based off of previous experience most likely internships and GPA received in college. Anybody with a previous job in whatever field will most like be at the top of the priority
over others.

Conclusion/Future plans

We hope that people accept our idea and push more attention towards global warming because
without the attention there will not be a habitable place for future generations. If sales of our car go well, we plan to build factories in North America and Asia, two continents where global
warming is very present, especially with fossil fuels. We also plan to work with cheaper models
or create our own so our solar-powered electric car can become affordable for everyone.

Self Assessment

The Writing for an engineering class in the spring semester was a helpful class for me in many ways. It helped me become a better communicator and helped me with self-analysis in my assignments.

Anytime there would be an assignment, the class was required to write a reflection essay on it. In these reflection essays, we were required to answer some questions. The questions were, what motivated you to write the essay? What is the main audience? And what you would do differently next time.

Understanding the audience was a big part of this class. When there is communication, the audience is a major factor to look out for. Understanding the audience will help you get your idea or proposal across.

The Formal letter assignment helped me understand the proper way of sending an email on a professional level. In the time we are living in right now, communication through the internet has become the most reliable way of communicating. The memo assignment helped me realize some of the problems on the City College of New York campus. The one I chose to talk about was the escalators. In the future, memos will be very useful for my studies and career.

The Lab report assignment by far was the most interesting. Since the whole class had to do the same lab, it made it interesting to see what kind of results each student gets. The lab was to see what the best way is to preserve a banana. It turns out that leaving it in the fridge is the best way to preserve a banana. The format for this assignment was APA. By following this format, it helped me understand what is expected when a lab report is assigned. The technical description assignment was also interesting. In this assignment, we were required to pick an object and write about each component of that item on a technical level. In my case, I wrote about a ballpoint pen. It was amusing to see how such a small item in our everyday life has so much to write about.

The Final assignment was a Proposal. This was a group assignment where we had to invent a solution to a problem in the world. My group was a solution to pollution. Our idea was to implement a solar panel to electric cars. This way, the car can get charged without the use of electricity. Our specific proposal was for Tesla’s model S. We were proposing to make the roof of the car a solar panel, this would maximize the total intake for solar energy. This assignment helped us realize some of the leading problems in the world. It also helped us with presenting skills. There couldn’t have been a better assignment for ending this class. It helped us get to know each other better.

All in all, writing for engineering has been the most helpful class for my field of study so far in City College of New York.
